Guardianship Attorney

When individuals are unable to fulfill their parental duties, it is common for other responsible adults — such as grandparents, aunts or uncles —to step into the shoes of the parent and care for minor children. While it is not necessary to establish legal guardianship over the children in your care, doing so will give you the ability to make decisions regarding that child's education, health and general welfare.

Located in Peachtree City, Lindsey & Lacy, PC, helps clients throughout the South Atlanta metro area protect the children they love, obtain temporary or permanent guardianships, and gain the legal rights they need to ensure minor children are properly cared for.

Guardianships: Ensuring Minor Children Are Well Cared For

In Georgia, guardianships can be temporary or permanent in nature.

Oftentimes, parents agree to appoint a third party — such as a grandparent, aunt or uncle or other responsible adult — as temporary guardian when work, illness or other life events make it impossible for parents to care for their children. Temporary guardianships can be terminated at any time, upon the agreement of the parents and the guardian.

Permanent guardianships are reserved for instances where parents are deemed "unfit" to raise their children. After an individual's parental rights have been terminated, family members often step in and request permanent guardianships over minor children. Terminating a parent's rights also clears the way for adoption.

At Lindsey & Lacy, PC, our attorneys help clients create temporary guardianships to ensure their children are well cared for and also help third parties obtain permanent guardianships over the children in their care.
